One of the most common allergies adults experience is to seafood.  In the United States, about 7 million adults have allergies related to seafood.    This is one of those allergies that’s more common in adults than in children.

What makes seafood allergies important to understand is that they can often cause very severe reactions.  It’s not uncommon for people to have severe skin reactions, blood pressure problems, and swelling in the throat.  These reactions can actually be life threatening.

Seafood allergies are frequently related to shellfish such as lobster, shrimp, and clams.  But the fish that cause the most problems are actually catfish, cod, salmon, and tuna.  The only real way to know if you have an allergy is to experience a reaction.

If you have experienced an allergic reaction, it’s important to know that the reaction will get worse with each exposure.  If you’ve had to take medication due to an allergic reaction, it’s important that you keep medication with you at all times.

It’s also important that you become vigilant about making sure you’re not exposed to the food that causes problems.  When you cook at home it can be easier to control your exposure, especially if you stay away from processed foods.

But when eating in a restaurant or at someone else’s home, it’s important that you ask questions about the ingredients.  Not every waiter or waitress is knowledgeable about specific ingredients in a dish.

Make sure that you ask your server to talk with the kitchen staff to verify the ingredients in a dish that might contain the fish you’re allergic to.  If you want to be extra careful, it can be a good idea to avoid seafood completely when you’re in a restaurant setting.

If you think that you have an allergy to seafood, it’s important to discuss it with your doctor.  You may be able to undergo allergy testing to help determine if it’s just one specific type of fish or all fish that causes problems for you.

Testing can help you to be sure that you’re not exposing your body to something that could be potentially life-threatening.  If you have a history of allergies in your family, you’re more likely to experience a seafood allergy as you get older.  While it’s rare for children to have this allergy, it is more common in boys.

Seafood allergies shouldn’t be taken lightly because of the frequent severity of the reaction.  If you’ve experienced an allergic reaction, it’s important to take steps to stay safe.
